What is Time to Interactive?

Time to Interactive, or TTI for GTMetrix Performance Report, stands for Interaction Time. This important and key criterion examines the responsiveness of the page during loading. Whenever we talk about page responsiveness, we think of mobile and tablet. The TTI standard is even more important for mobile phones and tablets; But that does not mean it is ineffective to check the status of the desktop.

The Time to Interactive criterion measures how long it takes for the user to fully interact with the page.
For example: that he can click on different buttons. It has probably happened to you that you have entered an intense page and the textual and graphic content (photos) of the page has been loaded for you (so far the SI criterion is). Then you clicked a button, but that button was not active. One of the reasons for this problem is that the code behind that button is not yet loaded and in fact, the button is not yet active. Therefore, our user is not able to interact with the page (ie TTI problem occurs).

That’s why the Time to Interactive criterion was created. TTI is when page resources are loaded and the user can fully interact with our page. Therefore, it can be said that TTI is a key and user-oriented benchmark. If the Time to Interactive time of our page is high, users can only watch the content and can not click the buttons, send a request and.. The lack of TTI time indicates that our page has the necessary responsiveness and reassures users.

PageSpeed Insight’s benchmark for TTI is less than 5 seconds. However, we see that the GTmetrix criteria for scoring this important criterion are different and in the following form:

  • Less than 2.5 seconds: Good
  • Between 2.5 and 3.2 seconds: Acceptable, but requires optimization
  • Between 3.3 and 4.5 seconds: Slightly longer than standard
  • More than 4.5 seconds: Much longer than standard


How to optimize TTI or Time to Interactive?

It can be said that optimizing the TTI standard depends more on the coding of our site than the technical quality of the server (of course, the server is also effective). But one thing we need to know is that TTI is almost between the FCP and the first main-thread task, so the more you optimize these, the better TTI will naturally improve.

Paying attention to the following will reduce the Time to Interactive time or interaction time and thus improve the UX of our pages.

  • Reduce the size of JavaScript files
  • Preload the main and important requests
  • Reduce JavaScript runtime
  • Delete unused JavaScript files
